Join the Rhins Revealed Volunteer Event
The final Rhins Revealed volunteer event is coming up later this month:
Site Recording at North Cairn WW2 Radar Station Monday 12 to Wednesday 14 December 2022
As part of the Rhins Revealed Community Archaeology Project, AOC Archaeology Group invite you to take part in a new survey of the WW2 radar station at North Cairn, on the north-west coast of the Rhins. The survey will aim to create a new 3D record of the site and the surviving buildings, to augment recent research on the station, and provide baseline data for conservation management.
No previous experience is necessary since participants will receive training in all aspects of the survey, and participants may attend on one or all days.
The North Cairn radar station was one of the original Chain Home stations installed during the second World War to provide early warning of enemy attacks on British shores and is one of the best preserved such stations in Scotland. At the forefront of emerging radar technology in the 1940s, the Advance Chain Home stations represent a major milestone in military and technological history.
The survey will take place from Monday 12 to Wednesday 14 December 2022. Participation is free and open to all but places are limited, so please sign up in advance. Equipment will be provided. You will walk around 500m from parking to site, and sturdy footwear, as well as warm, waterproof clothing, is recommended.
Please contact Graeme Cavers, AOC Archaeology: graeme.cavers@aocarchaeology.com for more information and/or to register to take part.

Last summer some Rhins Revealed volunteers were involved in works at Doon Castle Broch, clearing rubble and consolidating areas at risk of deterioration (you can find out more at Doon Castle Broch – Revealed from the Rubble – DG Trails). AOC Archaeology Group, who led the work, have produced a 3D model of the broch as it appears now, having had a significant volume of rubble removed from its interior. This digital version of the broch can be visited from anywhere in the world. Take a walk through the Broch at Doon Castle in 3D – DG Trails
