Herring Knowledge Wanted!
Bangor University FisHistory Project is investigating the history of the Irish Sea herring fishery and where they spawn using centuries of historical records (e.g., nautical charts, old newspaper records, parliamentary reports) with modern scientific data and local ecological knowledge. Their area of interest is the Irish Sea, in particular the Solway and Cumbria/ Lancashire coast. They would like to talk to active/retired fishers from local ports (e.g., Maryport, Morcambe, Whitehaven, Fleetwood etc), historians, and governmental organisations. They are also interested in chatting to individuals who may know about the historical importance of herring (and their spawning grounds) in the Solway Firth.
So if that sounds like you please get in touch with the project at fishistory@bangor.ac.uk or Blue Sky social media – projectfishistory
