Galloway proposed as the next National Park in Scotland!
The news was broken by the Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, Land Reform and Islands when she visited Galloway on Monday 22nd July. Speaking at Shambellie House, New Abbey, Mairi Gougeon MSP announced that the Scottish Government had selected our bid out of the five submitted to be considered for designation as Scotland’s next National Park.
What Happens Now?
This is not the end of the process just the start of the next phase. NatureScot have been asked to be the Reporter and to carry out a full review of Galloway and its suitability to be a National Park. It will also conduct extensive consultations throughout the area and then form recommendations to the Minister as to its suitability to be a Park, and if so what powers it should have, the costs and the make-up of the Board.
It will then be up to the Scottish Parliament to make the final decision on designating Galloway as Scotland’s third National Park.
