Coastal Conversations: Birdlife on the Solway Coast

Coastal Conversations: Birdlife on the Solway Coast webinar on Thursday 12 May at 6.30pm

This free online session will take a look at some of the interesting and varied birdlife on both sides of the Solway Coast.

The Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Solway Firth Partnership are presenting a series of webinars that focus on cross border topics such as geology, marine life and archaeology.

This talk, Birdlife on the Solway Coast, will take a look at some of the interesting and varied birdlife on both sides of the Solway Coast, focusing on areas where you can easily explore and see these magnificent creatures yourself.

Andrew Bielinski – RSPB Scotland Area Manager, Scottish Lowlands & Southern Uplands – will briefly look at 3 reserves along the Scottish Solway coast– Mull of Galloway, Crook of Baldoon and Mersehead – and the range of birds that occur on them – from breeding gannets to wintering geese. Andrew will touch on the impacts of this winter’s avian influenza outbreak on barnacle geese, as well as the more positive stories from the reserves.

John Callion – co-author in organizing and writing the Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Cumbria – will delve in to the world of warblers that are readily found along the Solway Coast, but nowhere more so than along the coastal path between Maryport and Allonby. Some of these are difficult to see, but all have a loud diagnostic song that helps with identification. All of these wonderful birds are trans-Saharan migrants, travelling thousands of miles each year and returning to the same place they were born!

The speakers will talk for approximately 40 mins followed by 15 mins of questions. A link to the event will be sent in your confirmation email and a gain 30mins before the event.
