Celebrate our Coast for World Oceans Day, 11.00am to 3.00pm on Sunday 11 June at Doon Beach, Kirkcudbright.
Join Solway Firth Partnership to celebrate our stunning coastline on World Oceans Day and have fun discovering seaside wildlife.
World leaders have recently agreed to project 30% of our lands, waters and ocean by 2030, also known as 30 x 30. The marine environment is a precious resource that need to be conserved to benefit wildlife and for people to enjoy. Solway Firth Partnership believes the more we know about our marine environment the more we care and take positive action to protect wildlife. To ensure our nation’s leaders follow up on their 30 x 30 commitment we need to show support.
Experts will be there to help identify seashells, seaweeds and other seashore finds. The Freelance Ranger will lead activities for young and old on the beach including sand raking art and the popular seashell necklace making. The Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere Team will be there to help you hunt for Biosphere’s Most Wanted including grayling butterflies and mermaids purses (the egg cases of sharks and rays) and offer free technical support on how to use the iNaturalist app for wildlife recording.
Nic Coombey, Solway Firth Partnership Project Officer, said: “It is amazing the range of wildlife that makes its home on the Dumfries and Galloway coast and World Oceans Day provides an opportunity to discover seashore life as well as being fun for all the family.”
