The Archaeology of the Solway

Talk by Andy Nicholson, Dumfries and Galloway County Archaeologist

Join Andy at Dumfries Museum for a quick chronological romp, from Mesolithic forests at Powfoot through to 20th century salmon nets, showing the variety of archaeology. Late Prehistoric (coastal forts and settlements, Lochmabenstone), Romans (Lantonside, Priestside, Ward Law), Early Medieval (Rockcliffe, Gatehouse, island churches), Vikings (place names, trade), Medieval (Caerlaverock harbour, coastal castles), Post Medieval harbours (Annan, Kingholm, emigres at Carsethorn), Solway Viaduct, 20th century military.

Organised as part of Dumfries Museum’s current exhibition which focuses on the sea.
