National Fishing Remembrance Day – 11 May

National Fishing Remembrance Day – 11 May.

The Fishermen’s Mission has announced details of the services to be held around the UK on 11th May 2025 to mark the second National Fishing Remembrance Day.

This year, a service will be held at Kirkcudbright Harbour at 2.30 pm. DG6 4HY and at Stranraer Parish Church at 11 am. DG9 0HH

Louise Liddell, Area Officer for the South West of Scotland says, “Fishing National Remembrance Day is a solemn reminder of the bravery and sacrifices of our fishermen. Every day, they face the unpredictable and often perilous conditions of the sea to bring seafood to our tables. It’s essential to honour their courage and acknowledge the risks they take to sustain our communities. On this day, we come together as a community to recognize their dedication and show our deepest respect for their invaluable contributions.”

Marc Evans, Chief Executive of the Fishermen’s Mission says, ‘There is a strong partnership between the charities and agencies that support fishing and, once again, we have all come together to conduct this important day of remembrance for the families and communities who have lost a loved one while working at sea.’

‘We are pleased that this year there will be an even greater spread of services around the UK coastline.  By working closely together, we hope to reach out to those families to assure them that their loss has not been forgotten and to offer them an opportunity for reflection.

‘For our fishing communities, it is important that the dangers of fishing are recognised alongside the risks that are inherent in bringing in the catch.  As an island nation, fishing is an important part of our history and culture, which we both celebrate and commemorate.’
