Legendary Galloway Mermaid Caught on Camera!

News, May 2017

Local Mermaid Highlights the Problem of Marine Litter

A Galloway Mermaid spotted in a sheltered bay by local photographer, Kit Carruthers, is the inspiration for a World Oceans event at Rockcliffe on Sunday 11 June from 12.00 noon to 4.00pm.

The World Oceans Day theme this year is Our Oceans, Our Future, focusing on the problem of plastic pollution and marine litter on sea life including the elusive mermaid. It is shocking to think that 8 million tons of plastic enter our ocean each year and plastics are now getting into our food chain.

Visitors to the Rockcliffe event can also learn more about Solway Coastwise, a project that is discovering coastal place names and the stories behind them.  The project is encouraging local people to share their own knowledge and stories about the amazing Dumfries and Galloway coastline.

Crossing the Moss

Ann Lingard (who also writes the Solway Shore Stories website and Solway Shorewalker blog) and photographer James Smith have recently completed their project Crossing the Moss, supported by Solway Wetlands Landscape Partnership.

The project looked at the effect on the peatbog of the building of the Solway Junction Railway across Bowness Common (one of the Solway's special raised mires) in the 1860s - and the present-day re-wetting and regeneration of the Common by the RSPB and Natural England.

Coastwise Walks

The big tides at the end of May provide an opportunity to explore the Dumfries and Galloway coastline.

Three Solway Coastwise short walks will explore seashore stories associated with caves and islands on our rugged seashore.

From smugglers and ship wrecks, healing wells to mermaids the guided walks will reveal the cultural heritage of the coast as well as looking at the wildlife on cliffs, sandy bays and rockpools.

The walks are part of Solway Coastwise
