30 Scottish Marine Protected Areas Announced

30 new Scottish Marine Protected Areas have been announced, a new Luce Bay Special Area of Conservation habitat mapping report has been published and advance information has been issued on a draft Solway Firth Special Protection Area.

Clyde Sea Sill is the closest to the Solway of 30 new Scottish Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) designated recently. Stretching from the north Rhins coast across the mouth of the Clyde, features of interest include black guillemot and seabed communities.

An SNH habitat mapping report on Luce Bay Special Area of Conservation (SAC) has been published recently.  This supplements previous SNH site survey work and will inform discussions on future management.

Information has been published recently by SNH, JNCC and Marine Scotland on a suite of marine draft Special Protected Areas (dSPAs) including one in the Solway Firth. Qualifying bird species for the Solway Firth dSPA include red-throated diver, common scoter and goosander. Formal consultation on the site is likely to take place early in 2015.

Solway Flower Guide Now Available

This new guide produced by Making the Most of the Coast project will help you identify 16 seaside flowering plants found on beaches along the Solway Coast.

Many flowering plants have adapted to flourish on different types of seashore and to aid identification this guide shows images of the flowers you are likely to find on: saltmarsh (merse), sand dunes, shingle banks and rocky coast. Compare your find with the pictures in the guide,

Enjoy your search for seashore plants but remember a wild flower always looks better in the ground than in your hand.
