Phone First

Fishermen who work in the waters off the Galloway coast are promoting their sectoral Code of Conduct with a simple message: phone first.

A Code of Conduct between local scallop and static gear fishermen has been in place in south west Scotland for many years. The Code has generally been well supported and enables maximum access to fishing grounds for both mobile and static gear fishermen. It is intentionally straightforward with the focus on good communication and incidences of conflict have been minimised.

Laminated copies of the Code are now widely available at harbours around the Solway as well as the Isle of Man, Wales and Northern Ireland and online here and at www.ifgs.org.uk. Copies can also be obtained by contacting Solway Firth Partnership on 01387 251991.
The Blue New Deal initiative

Since July of this year the newly founded Portpatrick Harbour Community Benefit Society has been collecting funds to take community ownership of their harbour. In September 2015, ahead of the deadline, the upper target of £100,000 was reached - a great success.

This story alongside many other positive stories from the UK coast are now featured on the Blue New Deal initiative website.

The initiative is working towards good jobs and economic sustainability for coastal communities through a healthier coastal and marine community. Further action by this initiative include a cross-party parliamentary briefing and the co-development of an action plan.
