Your Views Needed on Maryport Regeneration!

The original plan for the Wave, harbour and promenade was to create a new swimming pool by extending The Wave. However, in May 2023, Cumberland Council Executive was forced to shelve this idea as operational costs spiralled. There had been major concerns about the financial implications as construction costs had already risen dramatically and energy prices also increased. Estimates said the Council would need to find up to half a million pounds a year to subsidise the running costs – figures which are simply unaffordable at this moment in time.

The budget is £5,120,000 through the government’s Future High Streets Fund.

The options under consideration could include The Wave, the Harbourside and the Promenade. They are ideas that will benefit local residents and attract visitors to Maryport too.

Early consultation, before the Government money was awarded, highlighted the community’s desire to make more of those areas, with better facilities for all generations of townspeople and tourists, so that’s why YOUR input is needed now.

The aim of the Future High Streets Fund is to renew and reshape town centres and high streets in a way that drives growth, improves experience and ensures future sustainability. There is confidence that new and exciting alternatives can be found which will benefit Maryport for many years to come.
