The Scottish government has passed draft regulations for the deposit return scheme (DRS).
MSPs voted by 36 to 16 in favour of the regulations, with 19 abstaining. The decision means the scheme, which will see consumers charged a 20p refundable deposit on drinks cans and bottles, will now come in from 1 July 2022. This will make it easier for everyone to recycle their used bottles and cans, including all drinks sold in PET plastic, metal and glass.
Applications to become a scheme administrator have now opened. Other parts of the regulations will come into effect before the scheme goes live, to make sure it is ready on day one.
