Marine climate change impacts

The latest Marine Climate Change Impacts Partnership (MCCIP) Special Topic Report Card: Implications for the implementation of marine biodiversity legislation has just been published.

This Report Card looks at climate change and marine biodiversity legislation, with a focus on the legislation used to establish various types of marine protected areas.

The key headlines from the report are:

  • Climate change is rarely explicitly considered in marine biodiversity legislation, but mechanisms generally exist that could enable climate change issues to be addressed.
  • The potential impacts of climate change on marine protected areas include features being gained or lost from sites and, in certain cases, the entire network.
  • Flexibility is required in responding to climate change impacts on marine protected areas so options such as designating new sites, abandoning old sites and revising management measures may all need to be considered.
  • With over 1,250 designated features in the UK marine protected area network, identifying where and how these habitats and species are likely to be affected by climate change will be a critical step in managing marine protected areas.
  • At the current stage of development for the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, further practical consideration of how climate change could affect targets for the achievement of Good Environmental Status is required.

Wig Bay WW2 video making

Following a survey of the remains of the flying boat base in March 2015, young people from Apex Stranraer teamed up with the RAF Wig Bay generation to make a film about the history of the flying boat base and its stories.

Set up in 1942, this was Britain’s main wartime base for the maintenance of flying boats. It specialised in converting American-built Catalinas to RAF standards and in servicing other flying boats, including the enormous Sunderlands, which were to play a vital role in convoy protection during the Battle of the Atlantic. After the end of the war, the base remained in use until 1957; servicing, testing, and ultimately scrapping the now-redundant machines.

The film team explored the remains of the site, filmed the base and interviewed participants. Two teams competed to create their films, carrying out interviews, learning to use the cameras and equipment, and editing their footage.  A preview of the films can be found here.

Implementing the Loch Ryan Management Plan, Solway Firth Partnership has recently installed interpretation panels and public viewing binoculars around the Loch; made improvements to the lookout building at the Wig as well as producing a publication 'Great places to bird watch & explore'

Climate Change in Scotland- have your say

The 21st United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris runs from November 30th to December 11th 2015.

It is a crucial conference, as it needs to achieve a new international agreement, applicable to all countries, with the aim of keeping global warming below 2°C.

Keep Scotland Beautiful is undertaking a consultation exercise to find out what our audiences and the people of Scotland think about climate change and discussions taking place at the Paris 2015 United Nations Climate Discussions (COP21).

The results from this consultation will be collated and submitted to the Scottish Government. A summary report based on the results of the consultation will be presented to Aileen McLeod MSP before she attends the COP21 negotiations in Paris in late November.

Further to the consultation, Keep Scotland Beautiful has joined Stop Climate Chaos Scotland (SCCS). By becoming a member of this diverse coalition of more than 60 organisations, Keep Scotland Beautiful has committed to work together to create public momentum and major political commitment to action to tackle climate change in Scotland.
