New Scottish Priority Marine Features Report

News for March 2017

Scottish Priority Marine Features Report Now Available

The aim of this study was to produce a descriptive catalogue of the Scottish Priority Marine Features (including component habitats and species where appropriate) to serve as a reference for future nature conservation action.

Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) have generated a focused list of 81 habitats and species of priority conservation importance in Scottish waters. A single page summary has been produced for each with a description and map.  In addition, the feature distribution mapping used in the production of this report is being made available to view online via the National Marine Plan Interactive web portal NMPi.

The list comprises 26 broad habitats (e.g. burrowed mud), seven low or limited mobility species (e.g. ocean quahog) and 48 mobile species, including fish (e.g. blue ling) and marine mammals (e.g. minke whale).

The report can be accessed here

Seeking Cumbrian Sea Anglers

The Science team at the North Western Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (the NWIFCA) are working on a Recreational Sea Angling Strategy and need the help of sea anglers!

It is well known that sea angling brings many personal, social and economic benefits to the individuals, businesses and communities near the coast.

The NWIFCA want to find out the views and opinions of sea anglers who use the Cumbrian coast to find out what is important to them and to help the Strategy grow over time.

Mermaid Search
Solway Coastwise heard about several mermaid caves at Dumfries Environment Fair and we are keen to discover more!

Half fish and half women, mermaids seem to suffer from split personalities in the Solway - sometimes rescuing stricken sailors while also revenging wronged deeds particularly if their favourite rocky perch has been destroyed. Whatever the portrayal, mermaids have wound their way deep into Galloway folklore and although there are few mermaid related place names marked on modern maps their haunts live on in our oral tradition.

If you can help locate caves or rocks reputed to be used by mermaids or have a tale about their activities on the Galloway coast please let us know here
