Prehistoric Bone Found on Shores of Loch Ryan

National Museum Identifies Bone

The mystery bone found by Nic Coombey, Solway Coastwise Coordinator, on a beach at Loch Ryan has been identified by experts from the National Museum of Scotland as most likely being part of a femur belonging to a Woolly Mammoth.

Mammoth species roamed the steppes of North America and Western Europe from about 100,000 and 14,000 years ago. The almost total glaciation of Scotland means mammoth remains are rarely found although tusks and teeth have been recorded at about 10 locations.

Only one bone has been recorded in the 1800s but the bone and details about it have since been lost making the new find the only existing bone found in Scotland.

The priority is to conserve the bone and test it to see if it can reveal any further information about Woolly Mammoths in Scotland.

Rare Sparling Caught on Film

A documentary filmmaker has captured rarely seen footage of the annual sparling mass spawning event in the Cree as part of a “Saving the Sparling” project.

As part of this project Galloway Fisheries Trust are holding drop in days to collect local knowledge of sparling to ensure the history of the fish in this area is not lost.

Short clips of the fish migrating to the spawning grounds and an exhibition about the sparling will be shown at events in Newton Stewart and Gatehouse of Fleet.

New Farming Rules for Water

From April 2018 all farmers need to meet new rules to protect water quality.

The rules require farmers to:

keep soil on the land;
match nutrients to crop, and soil needs, and
keep livestock fertilisers and manures out of the water.

The new rules are designed to help improve water quality, set a level playing field for all farmers, help businesses save money from better resource efficiency and improve their resilience.

Farmers and land managers will be able to determine what approach is best for their land, through methods such as deciding when it is safe to spread fertilisers.
