National Grid Shares Proposals for Consultation

The National Grid shares details about proposals for the North West Coast Connections (NWCC) project which will be consulted on from 28 October 2016.

The connection being consulted on is approximately 164km (102 miles) long. It broadly follows the path taken by existing Electricity North West (ENW) pylon lines going around the coast of west Cumbria before going under Morecambe Bay to Lancashire.

Delivering the complete connection would require an investment of approximately £2.8 billion. Of that total cost, around £1.9 billion (two thirds) is proposed as being spent on measures all along the route to reduce its effect on the landscape, local communities and environment.

These include:

• putting 23.4km (14.5 miles) of new line underground through the entire western section of the Lake District National Park which could lead the existing lines there being removed completely, leaving it free of pylons for the first time in 50 years;

• building a tunnel approx. 22km (13 miles) long under Morecambe Bay to route the connection through, which avoids 60km of an onshore connection around south Cumbria and Lancashire;

• removing many of the existing pylon lines owned by ENW along our proposed connection; and

• replacing the low voltage line in the area around the Hadrian’s Wall UNESCO World Heritage Site with underground cables.

National Grid have today published a newsletter providing a summary of the proposals they’ll be consulting on (including an illustrative map), as well as details of information that will be available when the consultation launches to help you provide feedback, where you can find it and how you can take part. This is available to view on the project website here.

National Grid have also issued a press release to regional print and broadcast media outlining these proposals. You can find this on the project website here.
