New Code of Conduct for Solway lobster and scallop fishermen
Local fishermen in Galloway have recently developed a new Code of Conduct, designed to minimise conflict between the static and mobile fishing sectors in Luce Bay and Wigtown Bay. Work on the Code has been taken forward by Galloway Static Gear Fishermen’s Association, Solway scallop boat skippers and local harbourmasters with support from Solway Firth Partnership.
Local harbourmasters, Shaun McGuire and Peter Roberts, have readily offered to disseminate information regarding the Code and laminated copies with relevant contact details are now available from Isle of Whithorn, Kirkcudbright and Girvan Harbours.
Local fishermen hope that their responsible, voluntary and co-operative approach will be noted at a time when regulation of the sector is under scrutiny with the evolving Scottish Marine Bill and proposals to establish Inshore Fishery Groups. Regulation can come from within the sector and the ‘gentleman’s agreement’ can still have its place.
