Dive into the Solway!

If you fancy a new hobby for the New Year why not try Scuba diving and get to see the Solway's fantastic natural environment from a new perspective!

Newton Stewart Sub Aqua Club (NSSAC) are starting a new series of diving lessons from Monday 8th February 2010 at 7.30pm at Merrick Leisure Centre in Newton Stewart, running for 10 Monday nights, and with the first night a Try Dive and introduction. The Club can teach British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC) courses at all levels, from the absolute beginner's Ocean Divers course to Dive Leader courses (qualified to dive to depths of up to 50 metres) in a safe and contained environment with fully qualified instructors.  The lessons comprise one hour of theory, followed by an hour in the pool, and the night ends with a get together in the Creebridge House Hotel in the town.  For the rest of the year the Club organises dives, training and social events - a popular one being a beach barbeque in the summer! NSSAC would also be delighted to hear from qualified divers who are looking to dive with an active and local club - and if you already hold a PADI or other diving qualification NSSAC also offer cross over courses to BSAC certification.

For more information contact Secretary Jim Gibson at  james.gibson4@homecall.co.uk or see the NSSAC web site.

NSSAC are also actively involved with the Marine Conservation Society's Seasearch programme, and are currently providing Scottish Natural Heritage and the Partnership with information about the underwater habitats and marine life in Luce Bay, which will be passed on to Dumfries and Galloway's Environmental Resources Centre. This is important information as there is little available information about Dumfries and Galloway's underwater environment and we are grateful to NSSAC for their part in providing key data to help in the Seasearch programme.

NSSAC completed their Seasearch training with dives in Luce Bay as part of the World Oceans Week celebrations in June 2009, and an account of the diving, and more information about Seasearch, can be found in the current edition of Tidelines.
